The RCMP and RNC came together yesterday to raise funds for retired police service dogs in honour of a dog killed in the line of duty in Alberta just a few months ago.
Jago’s Run was held to raise funds for Ned’s Wish, a charity that provides financial support for retired police service dogs across Canada.
Jago was deployed on a high-risk call in Northern Alberta, where he tracked the suspect through dense forest for about 6 km but died in the line of duty.
Many police service dogs go on to live a happy retirement with their handlers, but the rigours of the job mean they sometimes suffer health issues into their senior years.
RNC Constable Jody Ryan says vet bills for retired police service dogs can be costly.
Hew says given the injuries dogs can suffer over the course of their service, vet bills can get high, which is why fundraising is so important.
