Classes are suspended at New World Island Academy in Summerford today after a presumptive positive case of COVID-19 was identified in an individual who attends the school.
The notification went out last evening.
The Assistant Director of Programs with the English School District says while Public Health advised that the school can be kept open, the District decided to suspend classes for today for operational reasons.
It’s one of a number of school communities currently affected by COVID-19. Macdonald Drive Elementary in St. John’s remains open for classes, however a number of students are self-isolating after being identified by Public Health as close contacts of two recent confirmed cases linked to the school.
Meanwhile, MSB Regional Academy in Middle Arm has also suspended classes for the day for operational reasons and to allow for testing as a result of a cluster in Baie Verte Peninsula area. The region is now under Alert Level 3.
A number of other schools are now operating under “high risk” protocols as a result. They include Copper Ridge Academy in Baie Verte, Hillside Elementary and Cape John Collegiate in La Scie, and St. Peter’s Academy in Westport.
