Labrador-Grenfell Health says until further notice there will be no physician on-site at the White Bay Central Health Centre in Roddickton-Bide Arm.
It’s just the latest in a series of announcements regarding physician shortages in the province. Residents of Bell Island recently learned they are also losing the last of the three physicians they once had.
The MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island, Opposition Leader David Brazil, is calling on government to respond to what they’re calling a “crisis.”
He refers to the nearly 100,000 Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who don’t have access to a family physician. He says the provincial government has no plan for the recruitment and retention of physicians.
Shadow Minister of Health, Paul Dinn, says doctors are not being listened to. He accuses Health Minister John Haggie of hiding from the issues.
Dinn says doctors are detailing the systemic barriers that make family practice in rural areas of the province an undesirable position.
He says that if Haggie will not address the issues, then it is time for the Premier to step in.
