A non-profit group dedicated to nationwide literacy in all aspects of life is offering workshops specifically tailored to this province’s needs.
Newfoundland and Labrador has one of the lowest literacy rates in the country, prompting ABC Life Literacy Canada to develop a program for employers, community organizations and post-secondary institutions.
The Activate Learning introductory workshops, which are 90 minutes long, focus on upgrading education to meet criteria in the changing workforce, developing skills to better manage money, or becoming more confident in managing health issues.
Gwim Philipp, an associate director with ABC Life Literacy Canada, acknowledges the stigma associated with adult illiteracy, but notes it’s not just about reading and writing.
She says it goes well beyond that, and includes essential life skills, adding that the inviting atmosphere of the workshops is in direct contrast to stigma that may exist in the public.
The program aims to improve the number of training opportunities for adult learners, employees and workplaces in the areas of employability and life skills, health literacy and financial literacy.
