The Vital Signs report for Newfoundland and Labrador is highlighting some of the major impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy.
The report highlights data from Stats Canada on impacts specifically to this province.
They say there was a 95 per cent drop in domestic travelers between November 2019 and November 2020, and an 81 per cent drop in international travellers.
As well, 44 per cent of all businesses laid off at least one person during the pandemic and 55 per cent of medium and large businesses laid off at least one person.
Rob Greenwood, director of the Harris Centre at MUN, says that number is lower for small businesses, but in proportion the impact is greater. He says 32 per cent of businesses employing four people or less laid off at least one person, equating to 25-50 per cent of their workforce.
