Eight people have died in this province over the last 12 months while waiting for cardiac surgery.
That’s according to Health Minister John Haggie, who was questioned about the situation in the House of Assembly yesterday.
Haggie says the yearly average is four people.
He doesn’t have any further analysis as to why more deaths have occurred, but does hint that options are being looked at.
He says there were 107 cardiac surgery procedure slots that were lost and have not yet been made up. He says he’s in conversations with Eastern Health about adding extra resources to make that up.
