The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District is merging into the Department of Education.
A marriage, not a take-over- That is how Education Minister Tom Osborne views the merging of the NLESD into the Department.
The move comes as government hopes to find financial efficiencies in the province’s education system.
While finer details will be rolled out in the coming weeks, Osborne has alluded to an increased role for school administrators and the Federation of School councils.
A number in terms of financial savings has not been calculated yet, but Osborne says it will be in the millions of dollars.
No mass layoffs are expected, with the department believing that savings can be found through attrition.
The bill on the selection of the transition board undergoes its second reading in the house of assembly today.
