Infrastructure Minister Elvis Loveless says he’s not happy with delays in finishing two new long-term care facilities in central Newfoundland.
And he says the government, which is the project manager, will hold the companies responsible for the financial fallout.
An information request by the PC Opposition found there were thousands of problems with the two new structures in Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor. Most were related to safety and lack of accessibility with the buildings, which were due to open this past spring.
He says while he’s not pleased with the delays, he insists taxpayers won’t pay for them.
The minister expects the homes to begin receiving residents in early January.
Opposition Response
Meanwhile, CBS MHA Barry Petten says the waiting and uncertainty has been hard on families.
He says as long as the proper fixes are done, residents should feel comfortable there. But he says he can’t blame them for their concern now.
Minister Loveless, meanwhile, says the number of problems has since been whittled down to about 100.
