GoFundMe has ended a fundraiser for the Freedom Convoy, which it has been informed has become an occupation.
The fundraising platform says it supports peaceful protests, but GoFundMe says it now has evidence from law enforcement officials that the previously peaceful rally has become an occupation, with police reports of violence and other unlawful activity.
The statement came after the fundraising platform was called to testify before the House of Commons Public Safety and National Security Committee to explain what safeguards were in place for the distribution of more than $10 million dollars in money raised.
GoFundMe issued a statement on Friday indicating that in order to remain a trusted platform, it has worked with local authorities to ensure they have a detailed, factual understanding of events taking place.
Following a review of the relevant facts and discussions with local law enforcement and Ottawa city officials, they have determined that the fundraiser is in violation of GoFundMe’s Terms of Service.
GoFundMe says organizers provided a clear distribution plan for the initial $1 million dollars to be used for participants to travel to Ottawa for a peaceful protest.
It says given how the situation has evolved, no further funds will be distributed to the Freedom Convoy organizers, and the remaining funds will be sent to credible and established charities.
