A Newfoundland artist now based in Ontario is joining with other artists in speaking out against the music streaming service Spotify.
High profile Canadian artists Joni Mitchell and Neil Young are among the latest to pull their catalogues from the music streaming service.
Young, who takes exception to Spotify’s decision to stream Joe Rogan’s podcasts, even went so far as to urge Spotify workers to quit their jobs for spreading misinformation.
Singer songwriter Sean McCann, formerly of Great Big Sea, is “nodding along in agreement” with those speaking out against the company’s “misaligned values.”
He says Spotify’s decision to prioritize certain creators on the app underscores what he calls the company’s “profit-at-any-cost priority.”
It was never about the music says McCann, and artists are paying the price.
He says over the last five years his solo catalogue, with 87,000 followers, earned him a sum total of just $640.25 on Spotify.
McCann chose not to release his latest album SHANTYMAN on streaming platforms “because they do not compensate creators fairly.”
