A woman from this province has died in what’s being described as a courageous rescue attempt in the South American country of Ecuador.
Forty-one-year-old Catherine Marshall was from Goose Bay but had lived in St. John’s and graduated from Holy Heart.
She was a flight attendant with PAL airlines and Air Labrador, while relocating to Ecuador with her partner, Jay, who also died in the tragedy.
It happened 10 days ago when they drowned while trying to save two children in the ocean near the town of Montanita.
It’s not clear if the children survived.
In an email to VOCM News, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada confirmed the deaths of two Canadian citizens, adding they are still gathering information from Ecuadorian officials, and providing consular assistance to the families involved.
Catherine Marshall’s family has asked for privacy. But in a Facebook post, her mom said “while their hearts are forever shattered, they are bursting with pride at the selfless attempt to save others.”
There will be no service at this time, but a get-together for close friends may be planned for the summer.
