A woman who stole thousands of dollars from the Corner Brook Minor Hockey Association has been sentenced to eight months of house arrest.
48-year-old Melissa Williams was treasurer of the volunteer group when she was arrested in 2019.
She had faced six charges linked to more than $100,000 of missing money, but in the end, pleaded guilty to two charges involving $12,000.
But that dollar amount, combined with a lack of remorse and reluctant guilty plea, caused concern for Judge Kymil Howe. She noted while the joint submission stated $12,000 was taken, the association was actually out almost $150,000.
Howe then turned her attention to Williams’ claim that media coverage and public shaming has been punishment enough.
To that, the judge was blunt, stating this is not about what the media or the public has done to you; it’s about what you have done to an innocent group of volunteers, parents and children.
Williams, who had no previous criminal record, must also serve a year of probation and pay back the $12,000.
She told the court she’s sold her house and plans to move to the east coast of the island.
