The union that represents some skilled trades workers at Vale’s Long Harbour site is accusing the mining company of being underhanded with the retendering of a contract.
Unifor says a recent contract flip earlier this month has left 150 skilled trades workers employed through subcontractor Pennecon Maintenance Services in a difficult position.
The union and the company had established a collective agreement that would have remained in place until 2025, however, according to the union, 150 workers have been asked to take up to a 20 per cent pay cut follow the retendering.
They say workers now have the choice between leaving the community where they’ve built a life, or staying for significantly less money.
James Farrell, a representative of FFAW-Unifor, says government legislators are aware of the situation and he wants to see some action.
He says this type of move usually happens to precarious workers such as food service and security but now it’s happening to skilled trades workers.
Unifor is calling for a public explanation from Vale. VOCM News has reached out to Vale for comment.
