A public consultation process on options presented to improve road safety for cyclists and pedestrians and promote active movement on Canada Drive in the city of St. John’s resulted in some serious questions, especially among area residents.
Dedicated lanes for bikes and pedestrians is an important issue in the neighbourhood, especially for students getting to and from schools in the area.
Among the main concerns raised was sidewalk snow clearing, and the extra strain put on residents who must not only clear their driveways, but the sidewalk and bike lane as well.
Among those who want to use the new bike lane/shared-use path, questions were raised about its usefulness if not maintained during the winter months.
Those who lived on Canada Drive in Cowan Heights preferred a shared-use path, while citywide there was a preference for dedicated bike lanes.
