The FFAW is calling for government action in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the cod moratorium.
They say both the provincial and federal governments need to look at the ways in which the fishery is “unrecognizable” today compared to 30 years ago in terms of modernization and harvesters rising out of poverty.
With this, however, they say there are still significant challenges facing harvesters including fairness, competition, transparency, and corporate concentration on the provincial level, and having a seat at the decision-making table on the federal level.
President Keith Sullivan doesn’t believe government has learned its lesson from the moratorium and needs to reflect on the past 30 years to see how they can improve opportunities.
