The pedestrian mall in Downtown St. John’s has returned for the third summer in a row, and it has brought with it an event that hasn’t been seen in the area in several decades.
The city says pop-up performances will be happening at the mall all summer, and they will be using some of the $105,000 of Come Home Year funding to put off four concerts outside the courthouse.
Mayor Danny Breen says such concerts in front of the courthouse were put off during the original iteration of the pedestrian mall back in 1970, and they will be going back to that this summer.
St. John’s Councillor Ophelia Ravencroft says weather permitting, the concerts will be held on Saturdays throughout the summer.
She says the events will start on July 16 and feature acts such as Kellie Loder, the Kubasonics, and the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra.
The Concerts will take place July 16th and 23rd, and August 13th and 27th. Mayor Breen says in case of bad weather the concerts will be postponed to Sunday.
