It was only a few months ago that some 800 fish harvesters flooded the steps of Confederation Building in anger, pleading with government to intervene in their industry. Despite meetings at the highest level in the province, the FFAW says not one thing has changed. In fact, many aspects have worsened.
Another cod moratorium was imposed on the west coast and Northern Peninsula a couple of days ago, and last week the Fish Price Setting Panel surprised harvesters by ordering a significant decrease in prices paid to harvesters.
FFAW President Keith Sullivan told VOCM Open Line with Linda Swain that if companies don’t like the price set by the panel, they simply quit buying that particular species. The root of the problem, says Sullivan, is a lack of competition.
