RCMP can’t pinpoint a single factor for a whopping increase in the number of fatal crashes and the number of fatalities on our roads and off-roads over the three-month period April, May and June this year compared with last.
Sixteen people died in car and off-road vehicle collisions in RCMP jurisdiction during that time this year, more than triple the number of people killed one year earlier when five people lost their lives by similar means.
Impairment is a factor as are aggressive and distracted driving and lack of seatbelt and helmet use.
Corporal Jolene Garland says there is no particular area of the province that can be given the “most dangerous” title.
They cannot place it as a certain time of day, a certain roadway in the province, a certain age or gender of driver, says Cpl. Garland. No matter where you’re driving, always wear your seatbelt and follow the rules,” she adds.
