The provincial government is marking Pride Week this week and says they’re already seeing movement in terms of policy.
Government marked the week with a flag-raising event yesterday.
Minister of Women and Gender Equality, Pam Parsons, says government has already implemented a number of initiatives surrounding the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community.
She says they have made legislative changes for non-binary residents, as well as implemented anti-harassment and anti-discriminatory policies.
Meanwhile, Opposition critic Helen Conway-Ottenheimer says it’s significant to have symbolic days and weeks, but it’s more important to carry the messages throughout the year and through policy changes. Specifically, she says there are some gaps that need to be addressed for the Transgender community.
She says we need to ensure that access to healthcare for transgender people is a top priority, as there are some gaps left to be filled through the legislature.
