Former teacher and coach Noel Strapp has been released on bail while he appeals convictions for sexually assaulting a student.
The 39-year-old was found guilty in February of offences against a 16-year-old girl when she was a student and he was teaching at Roncalli High in Avondale.
Strapp and the girl had about 100 sexual encounters either at school, at Strapp’s home, or in his car between 2014 and 2016.
But he appealed the convictions, claiming the trial judge’s ruling was unreasonable, uneven and unfairly in favour of the girl.
Yesterday, despite the Crown’s objections, the court granted Strapp’s request for release until his appeal is heard.
He must put up $3,000 cash, and has three other people or sureties putting up $1,000 each to ensure he abides by conditions.
They include no contact with the girl, her friends or family, to keep the peace, and he cannot leave the province.
It could be the new year before the appeal itself is heard.
