Work is underway to help repatriate the remains of two of the last Beothuk.
The remains of Demasduit and her husband Nonosabusut had been held in a Scottish museum for well over a century and are now back in the province where they belong.
Miapukek Mi’kmaq Chief Mi’sel Joe led the effort to have the remains brought back to the province for burial in the area where they once lived.
He says somewhere in or around Beothuk Lake would be ideal.
Work is now underway to determine the best way in which to lay the remains to rest.
He says they will need to be protected in some way, and strike the right balance preventing them from becoming a mass tourism draw. He says it has to be a sacred place where people gain an understanding of the life and death of the Beothuk people.
