A political leader in Labrador is making a strong push for improved search and rescue capabilities in the region.
Wally Anderson, a member of the Nunatsiavut Assembly, a former MHA and mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, is hoping that the three Indigenous groups in Labrador can come together on the issue.
Andersen plans to introduce a petition to the Assembly calling on the federal government to establish a full search and rescue base—similar to that which exists in Gander and Greenwood.
He says having a full-scale SAR base would bring a measure of comfort to the families of Burton Winters who froze to death on the ice and the two fishermen from Mary’s Harbour who perished when their fishing boat sank.
