Expect an update in the not-too-distant future on an expansion of the scope of practice of pharmacists in the province.
Health Minister Tom Osborne is responding to pharmacists who are voicing their concerns about a recent government announcement indicating that the scope of practice for nurses will be expanded.
Pharmacists have been calling for an expansion of their scope of practice for years and have made some progress in recent years with the administration of some vaccines, but they want to see it go much further than that.
Osborne indicates pharmacists have not been overlooked and government is actively working on a plan to expand their scope of practice.
He anticipates an update on the pharmacists’ scope of practice “in short order.” In the meantime, he says there is “no health group (or) discipline that is not being looked at in terms of what the scope of practice should be.”
