The Salvation Army has deployed teams to the southwest coast of the province to help with the emergency response in the area, and the organization is preparing for an extensive operation.
Janelle Hynes, Marketing and Communications Specialist with Salvation Army NL, says they have a team working “around the clock” in Port aux Basques to provide food at the emergency shelter, and they also have teams on standby in other nearby communities.
She details a lot of confusion and shock from people in the community, noting that they have been providing emotional and spiritual care to people as a result.
Hynes says they have a link on their website for monetary donations. In terms of what else could be needed, however, it is hard to tell at this stage.
She says this will be a long-term operation. Right now, Hynes says monetary donations are best so they can keep fuel in their vehicles and provide food for the emergency shelter.
Donations can be made online, or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
