Newfoundland and Labrador has lost one of its oldest veterans.
Charles “Charlie” John Starkes passed away on Friday at the age of 100.
Born in 1922 in Greenspond, Bonavista Bay, Starkes would go on to fight in World War II as a young man, serving with the Royal Navy.
He served on North Sea Convoy Duty, and survived the Battle of Normandy, and was a 75-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36.
Starkes is also remembered for his love of music, often one to entertain with his accordion and as a member of the Singing Legionnaires.
Visitation takes place today and tomorrow from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and tomorrow from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Barrett’s Funeral Home. The family asks that masks be worn at the visitation. Funeral service takes place Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at First United Church.
