Ward 3 councillor Jamie Korab says Ropewalk Lane is an essential part of the capital city’s business landscape, and he’s hoping the area will continue to thrive.
Korab was responding to word that Ropewalk Plaza which contains a number of small local businesses, has gone into receivership, creating some uncertainty among local business owners heading into the busiest time of year.
Korab says Ropewalk Lane has seen a great resurgence in recent years.
When he moved to St. John’s in 1999 it was a busy area, but after one of the local grocery store chains moved out it went through a bit of a lull, but in recent years it has bounced back with new business and restaurants.
Korab says he’s hopeful that a plan can be found to ensure the area’s future, and the city is willing to provide help where possible.
He says tax relief is available to landlords who have commercial properties where there are vacancies. He’s hopeful the landlord Vic Lawlor and BMO can find a solution that doesn’t affect the businesses.
