It’s a big day in the community of Gaultois as it’s the final day for residents to return their ballots for the vote on relocation.
According to government, eligible residents of the once-bustling community have had one month to return their voting cards. A similar timeframe is being provided to ensure that all ballots postmarked on or before today have been returned.
Once all ballots have been received, government says an independent third party will count the votes. The results will be released some time in early May.
The process has not come without controversy, however.
Some residents are upset that people who were living in Gaultois in the year prior to the expression of interest going out, but have since packed up and left, are eligible to vote and decide the fate of those still living there.
In response to those concerns, Municipal and Provincial Affairs Minister Krista Lynn Howell notes that the policy was recently reviewed and updated.
She says their policies are always under review, and they’re not opposed to revisiting it.
