Memorial University’s spring convocation will be held in May, amid a backdrop of controversy.
A total of 14 honorary degrees will be conferred during sessions in Corner Brook on May 18, and in St. John’s from May 30 to June 2.
Those being recognized possess leadership backgrounds that run the gamut from the circus to multiculturalism to deep-fried chicken.
Almost 2,800 degrees will be conferred in total, including more than 600 graduate degrees.

Dr. Sylvia Bashevkin, gender and politics scholar;
Annette Clarke, National Film Board executive and film producer;
John and Peggy Fisher, Fisher’s Loft owners and arts patrons;
Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Come From Away creators;
Dr. David Huntsman, global leader of cancer research;
Beni Malone, master of circus and the physical arts;
Derek Norman, filmmaker and mentor;
Gurdeep Pandher, artist and bhangra dancer;
Odelle Pike, Indigenous advocate and volunteer;
Dr. Lloydetta Quaicoe, Sharing Our Cultures founder and CEO;
Greg Roberts, CEO of Mary Brown’s Chicken and philanthropist;
Susan Sherk, community developer and arts champion.
