The FFAW has a demonstration planned outside Confederation Building on Monday to call attention to what they call the crisis in the snow crab fishery and the need for government officials to act.
The gathering, which is being termed a peaceful demonstration, will begin at 11:00 on Monday morning.
Harvesters say the $2.20 a pound set through Final Offer Selection has rendered the fishery unsustainable. The union says coastal communities are in crisis as thousands rely on the economic opportunities generated by snow crab.
The provincial government says it’s continuing to monitor the situation and hopes that market conditions improve, but the FFAW maintains that the $2.20 set for crab this year is not in line with market declines.
The union wants to negotiate what they call a meaningful resolution to the situation so that harvesters can get back on the water sooner rather than later. President Greg Pretty wants to know why multi-million dollar processing companies are afforded the privilege of assuming all of the reward, but none of the risk.
