SEA-NL, which represents enterprise owners in the province, is encouraging harvesters and the public to get involved in their Pot to Plate program in light of the recent impasse caused by low crab prices.
The Final Offer Selection process set the price of crab for this season at just $2.20 a pound – a price harvesters say is not economical to fish. That’s close to $4.00 less a pound than the price set last year.
SEA-NL President Pam Patten, who operates her own fishing enterprise, says they’ve put together a program to connect customers looking for local live crab, with harvesters willing to sell it.
They’re recommending a wharf price of $5.00 a pound, but say ultimately, the price is the call of the harvester willing to sell it; Patten calls it a win-win.
SEA-NL is asking harvesters and the public to fill-in their online Hook-Up form to connect buyers with sellers.
