A new study from the Angus Reid Institute shows the majority of Canadians support the more than 155,000 federal public servants on strike.
Over half of Canadians surveyed support two of the demands made by the Public Service Alliance of Canada. Sixty-five per cent were in favour of wage premiums for night shift work and overtime, and nearly 55 per cent support federal employees’ request to work from home.
However, other demands brought forward by PSAC were not met with the same public support.
Less than half of Canadians (48 per cent) support a proposed 4.5 per cent increase in annual wages over three years or an expansion to paid family leave (44 per cent). Thirty-seven per cent agreed with bringing in compensation for workers who speak an Indigenous language.
Polls found that the majority of people who support all PSAC demands were either Liberal or NDP supporters. Those side with the the Conservative Party were more likely to be against four out of five requests, thought 52 per cent say they support wage premiums.
