First Voice is renewing their calls for provincial action on police oversight after what they’re calling a “lack of leadership” from government on the issue.
The organization released their report “Building Trust, Restoring Confidence” last October. It includes 26 recommendations on strengthening police oversight in the province.
First Voice says they have met with government officials, including Justice Minister John Hogan, numerous times but government has not made any commitments or counter proposals.
One of the key recommendations is implementation of a civilian-led police oversight board, which the organization calls a “common sense” idea that should be implemented “without further delay.”
First Voice says they have begun working with provincial and national organizations to promote greater transparency and accountability in policing.
However, they say those actions do not relieve government of their responsibility to act on the issues.
