The opposition is asking questions about changes to the registration process for car dealerships that they say could force some shops out of business.
PC MHA Chris Tibbs says government’s new dealer web is creating a “stranglehold” of red tape for businesses who now have to re-register under the new system, despite many of them operating in the province for decades.
He explains that companies who operate out of a PO box, and are in areas like Local Service Districts, may not be able to get the physical address needed to register.
He says there are wholesalers in the province that will not be able to operate under the new regime because they won’t be able to get a physical address.
Digital Government and Service NL minister Sarah Stoodley says no dealers have approached her department with any concerns.
She says Tibbs’ comments were the first she has heard of any issues. She notes that the changes were passed in 2020, so dealers have known this was coming for a while. She is open to speaking with any dealers who have concerns.
