Today is World Bee Day and the grade 7 students at St. Bonaventure’s College have been busy studying and researching the life cycle of honeybees, the art of beekeeping and the importance of honeybees in the pollination of crops.
The students have been working at the St. Bonaventure’s beehive located behind The Gathering Place off Barnes Place in St. John’s.
Student Blake Smith describes some of the work they’ve been doing with the bees over the last school year.
They’ve been learning about smoking the bees, and how to take the honey from the frames.
He admits it might be a bit scary, but with the bee suit on you’re fine.
Charlotte Cummings says they started working with the bees over the winter and it’s exciting now that they’re starting to stir.
She says there wasn’t much happening over the winter, but it was still cool to see it. Over the last few days they’ve been visiting the bees and with the warming weather, the bees are becoming more active.
