The Paramedic Association says the move to consolidate all ambulance services into one is a slow process, but progress is being made.
President Rodney Gaudet says the province has brought in another consultant to conduct a report, something he finds discouraging as multiple reports have been published over the past few years.
The move would see nearly 60 providers from across the province become one publicly-run system, but with the change comes a number of moving parts.
He says it’s key to establish a centralized medical dispatch—something mentioned in the 2023 budget. Incorporating a system like that would put the paramedic system on par with other jurisdictions.
Another focus under a single service would be designating services to different areas, such as spreading available ambulances to a number of communities, rather than have them all in one hub.
