A unique seniors’ day program, the first of its kind in the province, has officially launched.
The Neighborhood is a drop-in Adult Day Program in St. John’s that provides affordable social and recreational programming and personal care support.
President of Fort Amherst Healthcare, Mike Powell, says the idea was to build a program that is highly stylized as a neighborhood, meant to be for people who are seeking a sense of community.

It includes a retro dinner, a big indoor walking track, a pub, a craft space, recreation activities and home cooked food, with LPNs on staff to provide management, supervision, and medication administration.

Powell says there are a lot of folks in the community that would benefit from the services that are offered at their care homes who are not ready to live in a residential facility.

He says the program is good for many types of people such as folks who live with their kids, or spouses who are primary caregivers which there is often no respite or relief. Powell says it’s a drop in basis where you can enjoy all the types of programs that are in a residential facility but you get to go home at the end of the day.
