NDP MHA Jordan Brown is calling on government to adopt a proactive approach to wildfire preparedness instead of the current reactive response.
Brown emphasizes the need for reinstating emergency forest-fire-response teams and a water bomber in Labrador West, which were cut by the Liberal Government in 2019.
With 400 wildfires currently burning and over 2,200 reported this year alone, causing significant damage to millions of hectares of land, Brown stresses the importance of a national strategy with adequate resources.
He suggests that regions should have their own trained fire response teams and equipment, allowing them to respond locally and then collaborate with federal response teams.
