The Nunatsiavut Government is joining with Torngat Mountains MHA Lela Evans and Makkovik Mayor Barry Andersen in calling on the provincial government to subsidize air travel in the region.
Ice conditions on the north coast of Labrador are disrupting regular ferry services, leading to calls for air services for area residents at ferry rates. The Nunatsiavut Government says the province has an obligation to ensure Labrador Inuit communities have dependable and affordable freight and passenger services.
First Minister Melva Williams says the shipping season is delayed due to lingering ice, and air services should be put in place at rates comparable to that of the Kamutik W.
She says subsidized air services were previously provided to Black Tickle, and “it is only fair for people and businesses within the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area to be afforded the same treatment.”
