The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary are warning that the grandparent scam has returned to Newfoundland and Labrador.
The scam, which usually targets the elderly, involves someone claiming to be a family member in a tough spot and requesting money. A supposed official then comes to the person’s home to pick up the money.
Earlier this year, the RNC received multiple reports of the scam, resulting in the arrest of a man from Ontario.
This week, the constabulary has received two reports of elderly people losing money as a result of the fraudulent activity.
They are reminding, if anyone receives such a call, that no law enforcement agency or public official will demand money over a phone call as part of any judicial or investigational process.
The targeted person should end the phone call and contact their loved one immediately.
RNC say the operation is that of a criminal network that relies on sophisticated research and technology to get money from unsuspecting members of the community.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the RNC or Crime Stoppers.
