A woman from Burnt Islands, just west of Port aux Basques, says people in her community are totally in the dark about compensation and assistance from post-tropical storm Fiona.
While Port aux Basques was hardest hit with many homes either washed out to sea or damaged beyond repair, other communities on the southwest coast also suffered the wrath of storm surge whether to private property or infrastructure such as wharves.
Holly Keeping says if you look at it from a per capita lens, her community also got hit hard. She’s aware that there is a process which has to be followed, she hasn’t received any word whatsoever.
She says on the day of Fiona, they had to wait for the water to go down before getting off the causeway.
T’Railay Repairs Process Begins
The tendering process to repair a piece of infrastructure damaged in Fiona has begun. The T’Railway Provincial Park on the southwest coast remains closed but repairs should be completed by the end of July.
Storm surge caused significant damage to a trestle in the vicinity of J. T. Cheeseman Provincial Park and significant washouts throughout the area from the park to Port aux Basques.
The public is asked to report any damage or concerns related to the T’Railway to the Parks Division by emailing trailway@gov.nl.ca or by calling 709-637-2040.
