The jobless rate in Newfoundland and Labrador is now the lowest in living memory.
The rate stood at 10.2 per cent in May but it plummeted to 8.8 per cent in June, one of the lowest on record.
While we are still the highest of any jurisdiction in Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador is closing in on Prince Edward Island where the rate is 8.2.
St. John’s has one of the lowest jobless rates of the major cities in Atlantic Canada surveyed—5.0 per cent. That’s lower than Charlottetown, Saint John and Moncton and about on par with Halifax, 4.9.
Nationally, the rate jumped to 5.4 per cent from 5.2.
Premier Andrew Furey says the latest statistics speaks to the future of the province.
Furey says it’s easy to get bogged down on the negative, but touts the province as a great place to work and live. He says the current economic and employment opportunities are some of the best there has ever been with a number of sectors continuing to grow.
