NDP MHA Lela Evans is calling on the government to increase the subsidies for residents seeking invitro fertilization treatments.
The Liberal government had promised to open an IVF clinic in Newfoundland and Labrador during the 2021 election, but two years have passed without any action.
Evans argues that the lack of local access to IVF services burdens individuals with high travel expenses, in addition to the already costly procedure.
She points out that the current $5,000 subsidy offered by the government covers only a fraction of the true costs. Evans believes an increase in subsidies is necessary until a local clinic is established.
She emphasizes the need to support individuals and families who rely on IVF, especially considering that one in six couples in Canada requires these services.
Evans questions the government’s delay in fulfilling its promise and calls for an adjustment to the subsidy program to include travel expenses.
