A Carbonear teacher and his family have resurrected a cherished local agricultural business.
Noel’s Turkey Farm in Freshwater, Carbonear was known throughout the Conception Bay North area for supplying fresh local turkeys, but the farm stopped producing birds back in the 1990s.
The farm hadn’t been in operation for some time, and at one point there was some interest in converting the property into a cannabis production facility.
That’s where David Kennedy comes in. He says he approached the owner to see if he was interested in selling and as luck would have it, he was.

Kennedy’s Turkey Farm started producing birds last year, a process Kennedy calls a steep learning curve. He admits one of the hardest things was keeping birds to a weight that customers want. He says generally-speaking, customers are not looking for birds 25 pounds or bigger.
That’s tough getting the timing down says Kennedy because the feed is always there and the birds will keep eating and getting bigger.
Kennedy says they made it through their first year, and are currently raising the next crop of birds for the local market, sold mainly through Noel’s Convenience in Carbonear.
