There are more problems with the equipment at Muskrat Falls, but Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro assures that there will be no interruption in the electricity flow to customers.
Two of the four generators are experiencing vibrations but one of them, number two, will be taken apart and repaired. Vibrations in unit two constrain it to a fixed-blade mode, which limits its load range to levels between 180 to 206 MW. Hydro is trying to find out the root cause of the vibrations, which were first noticed almost two years ago. The full unit will be dismantled—a significant undertaking. Hydro does not have a timeline yet but says the cost of the equipment will be covered by insurance.
The corporation knows the root cause of the vibrations in unit one. Temporary repairs have been made and a permanent one is pending.
Muskrat Falls was commissioned in April.
