Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, have announced their decision to part ways after spending 18 years together as a married couple.
Through posts on Instagram, both Justin and Sophie conveyed their decision, a result of “numerous profound and challenging discussions”.
Their love story began in their childhood, but it was only as adults that they rekindled their relationship, leading to a wedding in May of 2005.
The couple has three children – Xavier, who is 15-years-old, Ella-Grace, aged 14, and Hadrien, their youngest at nine years old.
Justin Trudeau is not the first Prime Minister to announce a separation during his tenure. He follows in the footsteps of his father, Pierre Trudeau, who separated from his wife Margaret in 1979. Their divorce was finalized in 1984.
