Officials and young people in this province are bringing awareness to the issues facing youth and their rights on this National Child Day.
Celebrated each year on November 20, National Child Day highlights the unique needs and special protection of children and youth that are recognized in the human rights treaty established by the United Nations Convention.
The treaty is based on non-discrimination, the best interests for children in life and survival, while supporting their development and encouraging participation in society.
The Child and Youth Advocate for this province, Linda Clemens Spurrell, says rights and support for young people have come a long way over the years, but there is still work to do to ensure their voices are being heard on issues impacting them.
Though today is the national day to bring awareness to children’s rights, she emphasizes the importance of making youth aware of their rights and protections every day of the year.
Meanwhile, the City of St. John’s is holding a number events week to mark National Child Day. More information can be found on their website.
