The Public Health Agency of Canada is providing precautionary measures for the public to follow in light of a salmonella outbreak associated with cantaloupes.
April Hexemer, Director of the Outbreak Management Division, reports that as of Tuesday, there have been five deaths and 129 confirmed cases of salmonella across six provinces—British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, PEI, and Newfoundland and Labrador—tied to cantaloupes.
However, Health Canada estimates that for every lab-confirmed case of salmonella, there are approximately 26 other individuals who do not undergo testing, experience milder symptoms, and manage their illness at home.
Hexemer says people should not eat, use, sell, serve or distribute any Malichita or Rudy brand cantaloupe, and fruit trays.
In addition, she explains that there have been recalls for other produce items processed alongside contaminated cantaloupes like those cut with this same knife or on the same cutting board.
Fruit like watermelon, pineapple, honeydew melon and other fruits commonly found on fruit trays have also been recalled.
Hexemer is reminding people to check their refrigerators.
She advises that if people are unable to determine whether the fruit in their fridge or freezer is included in the recall, it is recommended to dispose of the fruit and thoroughly wash their hands afterward.
If you suspect you have contracted salmonella, the agency recommends seeing a health-care provider.
