The province’s Eating Disorder Foundation is continuing its awareness efforts as prevalence of various eating disorders continues to increase.
Executive Director Paul Thomey says an estimated 25,000 people in the province are dealing with an ED at any given time.
He says young females are still most likely to be struggling with a disorder, but the demographic is starting to change.
Those struggling include children as young as six and seniors of all genders and backgrounds.
Thomey says it can be difficult to approach the subject and recommends reaching out to their organization for support.
If you’re uncomfortable broaching the topic with someone you suspect has an eating disorder, Thomey encourages folks to connect with them so they can give advice and arrange the proper supports.
A proclamation was signed earlier this week, recognizing February 1 – 7 as Eating Disorder Awareness Week in the province.
The week is also being commemorated in a number of municipalities throughout the province.
