A renowned theatre artist is hoping to bring his show discussing his son’s experience navigating the mental health care system to the next generation of doctors and nurses.
Andy Jones’ ” Don’t Give Up on Me, Dad” tells the story of his son Louis’ battle with the mental and emotional anguish that led to his suicide. The one-man show ran this past summer at the LSPU Hall.
Earlier this month, Jones performed a condensed, low-tech version of the show for students and faculty of Memorial University’s Medical School. Now, he’s looking to do it again.
He says he felt it was important to share Louis’ story with new health professionals.
He says he’s very positive towards everyone’s efforts in the health care system, but Louis’ story is a reminder that it is not a monolithic system and of the real people involved.
Jones says the show’s title holds a main theme of the show.
He says he named it after a phrase Louis would say to him after getting in trouble at school.
“The show, in a way, is my attempt to not give up on him and try to tell his story and hopefully it will help other people, as he wanted to all his life.”
Jones is looking to get the show to as many people as possible.
