A dramatic series of events unfolded in the capital city overnight, starting with a vehicle striking a home.
Around 1 a.m., the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to the collision at a home in the area of Circular Road.
The driver had fled the area on foot, so police brought in K9 services.
Officers located the suspect in the area of Quidi Vidi Lake, but when they approached the man, he ran onto the ice.
The St. John’s Regional Fire Department was called in to help get the man safely to shore, as several parts of the lake had open water. Firefighters reached the suspect, brought him to shore, and he was taken into custody.
Meanwhile, an ongoing investigation at the home determined that the vehicle involved was stolen, and there were several outstanding warrants for the man.
The 36-year-old is charged with possession of stolen property and leaving the scene of an accident. Police also executed two warrants for unlawfully at large and breaches of a court order.
The man was held for court.
